Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to question certain calls from the official, mirroring the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
